#PeopleofPCH is a series that highlights the diverse stories of staff, residents, volunteers, and families across Partners Community Health (PCH).
Meet Tom Lyttle, a volunteer at Wellbrook Place. Tom shares his story as part of National Volunteer Week and in celebration of our April #BelongingatPCH theme: Collaboration.
“After retiring, I knew I wanted to give back—and living nearby, I’d often walked past Wellbrook Place. My mom worked in long-term care when I was a teenager, and she always made me visit the residents if I wanted to borrow the car. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but looking back, it had a huge impact.
Volunteering here felt like a natural step. I’m not here for my benefit, I’m here to support the people who live and work here. Collaboration in this setting isn’t just about tasks, it’s about presence. Sometimes it’s offering a friendly conversation, other times it’s communicating in different ways—with facial expressions, gestures, or just quiet company.
I’ve learned that even the smallest interactions, like a wave, a smile, or a few minutes spent sitting with someone, can make someone’s day. Residents may not always say it out loud, but they remember those moments. And if I can help someone feel seen or valued, then I know my time has meaning.
That’s what it’s all about for me. Showing up, being part of the team, and making even the smallest experiences memorable for someone else.”
