#PeopleofPCH is a series that highlights the diverse stories of staff, residents, volunteers, and families across Partners Community Health (PCH).

Meet Katayoon Kiani, a volunteer at Wellbrook Place. Katayoon shares her story as part of National Volunteer Week and in celebration of our April #BelongingatPCH theme: Collaboration.

“Back home in Iran, I worked as an ICU nurse. When I moved to Canada nine months ago, I was studying for the nursing exam and wanted to stay connected to healthcare in a meaningful way. Volunteering at PCH has been an amazing opportunity to do just that while getting to know the Canadian healthcare environment.

One of the best parts has been connecting with residents. Unlike critical care, where patients are very ill and time is limited, here I’ve been able to slow down, talk, and build real relationships. On my very first day, I met a resident named Marilyn—she has dementia, but somehow still remembers me each time I visit. I’m now assigned to a different floor, but I always make time to stop by and see her. That connection means a lot to me.

Collaboration as a volunteer means working alongside nurses, staff, and other volunteers as one team. The staff on my floor have been welcoming and supportive, and recently I was even asked to help orient new volunteers. It’s been a great way to give back, learn, and grow. I’m proud to be part of this community.”
