#PeopleofPCH is a series that highlights the diverse stories of staff, residents, and families across Partners Community Health (PCH).
Say hello to Norma Lumsden, a volunteer at Partners Community Health:
“Volunteering has always been a priority for me. Over the years, I’ve volunteered with Scottish country dancing associations, hospitals and church music programs as a way to stay connected and give back to the community. When I was visiting my friend who lives at Wellbrook Place, it sparked the idea to reach out to the Volunteer Office to see how I could get involved around here and they were incredibly supportive right from the start.
Currently, I’m in the shadowing phase, learning the ropes and getting acquainted with everything. From meeting the residents to understanding the day-to-day work of the recreation staff to supporting various resident activities like bowling, arts and crafts and Zumba.
Once the shadowing is over, I’ll be leading a program in August where residents can knit and crochet while listening to music. It started with a desire to share my collection of CDs, and the idea evolved into something more meaningful–an opportunity to engage residents in a creative and enjoyable activity.
In a long-term care setting, volunteering plays a crucial role. It’s about bridging the gap between residents and the outside world, providing support not just for them but also for their families and the staff who care for them.
Volunteering is also closely tied to wellness. It supports my own wellness when I know I’ve made a positive impact through my actions, and it supports the well-being of others when I’m able to bring a smile to someone’s face.
I’ve been retired for a few years now after a career that spanned various roles. From administrative jobs to ushering, sales, and even human resources, I’ve worked in diverse settings like a provincial government office, a museum, and even as a part-time cashier at the Metro nearby. Volunteering has given me a new sense of purpose during retirement. I’m excited about starting our knitting and music program and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the residents here. It’s about finding joy in giving back, no matter how small the gesture.
If there’s any advice I’d give to someone considering volunteering, it’s simple—just go for it. The support and encouragement you receive from the staff here make all the difference. Take that first step, and you’ll see how rewarding it can be. “
