#PeopleofPCH is a series that highlights the diverse stories of staff, residents, and families across Partners Community Health (PCH).

Say hello to Daniela Carvalho, a Recreation Aide at Wellbrook Place East. To celebrate the February #BelongingatPCH theme of “Compassion” and highlight Recreation Therapy Month, Daniela shares her story:

“I’ve been in this field for 34 years, and for me, it’s more than just a job—it’s a passion. I truly love working with residents and helping them in any way I can. It’s an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding career, and I feel so lucky to do this work every day.

That said, every day is different. And a good sense of humor helps to manage some of the daily challenges. What I find most rewarding is helping residents rediscover a sense of purpose, trust, and responsibility—meeting them where they are. When they feel that I need their help, that they can be useful, I can see their barriers lift. It makes a difference in their sense of autonomy and well-being.

One of the things that makes our team at PCH unique is the wide range of ages and generations that work here. We have experienced staff who bring years of knowledge, and younger staff who bring fresh perspectives. That combination makes for a strong team. Plus, I have to admit, the younger generation definitely helps me out when it comes to technology!

Music is also a big part of my approach. I always incorporate it into my programs because I see the impact it has on residents. Whether it sparks a memory, brings back a feeling, or simply provides a moment of calm, I can see the difference—whether it’s in a smile or a peaceful expression. Music has a way of reaching people, even when words can’t.”
