#PeopleofPCH is a series that highlights the diverse stories of staff, residents, and families across Partners Community Health (PCH).
Say hello to Maggie Mills, the daughter and caregiver of one of our residents at Wellbrook Place East. To celebrate the April #BelongingatPCH theme of Collaboration and in honour of National Caregiver Day on April 1, Maggie shares her story of care, connection, and community.
“I’ve always been a caregiver—and so was my mom. I started young, babysitting and teaching swimming lessons to children with learning disabilities. I went on to become a teacher, led Girl Guides, volunteered with medically fragile children, and even helped out at the Parapan Am Games. Caregiving has always just been a part of my life—it’s in my nature to show up and support others.
When my mom’s needs started to change during COVID, I naturally stepped in more. I was driving back and forth from Toronto to Burlington constantly. Eventually, she moved into care, and now she’s here at Wellbrook Place East. I come almost every day. I don’t know how long she’ll be with us, but I know that being present gives her comfort and stability. She’s more grounded when I’m around.
For anyone stepping into the role of caregiver, my biggest advice is this: you have to be an advocate. You know your loved one best, and sometimes that extra voice makes all the difference. It’s not always easy, but it’s meaningful. You have to meet them where they are—especially as things change—and just go with them, even if it’s not always logical. Letting go of being ‘right’ and leaning into compassion has made a huge difference for both of us.
I’m so grateful to collaborate with the care team here. I know the staff well, and we truly work together. They’ll sit with my mom when she’s restless, curl her hair after a shower, and treat her like their own grandmother. I volunteer when I can—doing crafts, reading to the residents, helping with activities, even checking in on other residents who don’t get many visitors. We’re all in this together. Everyone wants the same thing: to help our loved ones feel safe, supported, and cared for. That’s what true collaboration looks like.”
