#PeopleofPCH is a series that highlights the diverse stories of staff, residents, and families across Partners Community Health (PCH).
Say hello to Patricia, a devoted daughter and caregiver to her father, a resident at Wellbrook Place West. To celebrate the April #BelongingatPCH theme of Collaboration and in honour of National Caregiver Day on April 1, Patricia shares her story of care, connection, and community.
“Being a caregiver is overwhelming at times—you’re watching someone you love change into a new person, and that can be really painful. But I’ve learned the value of focusing on the small moments of connection, even if he doesn’t recognize me by name.
What’s helped me is leaning on a support network—my sister Lori, extended family, the team at Wellbrook Place, and the Alzheimer’s Society. My advice to others is: don’t try to do it alone. Reach out. Even a simple reminder from a nurse telling me I didn’t have to come in every day gave me permission to take care of myself. You need people around you who support you, even if they aren’t physically there. It really does take a village.”
